Motion Designer
I joined Nothing as their first in-house motion designer, primarily to develop visuals for product launches, but also to begin developing the motion language of the brand as a whole.

This motion design position has a specific focus on developing motion graphic workflows and tooling through scripting and expressions. The goal of the creative automation department is to discover ways of creating modular and responsive motion design at scale.
I direct projects and sub-contract for other agencies under my own working name, dansch. My work primarily involves creating motion design, systems, and templates for live events, short films, online courses, and promotional material.
Over several months I worked in-house with the marketing director to create assets for the sales department, internal presentations, larger campaigns for trade shows, and merchandise.
This role was specific to producing all the photography and design for a promotional catalog for the Faculty of Fine Arts as well as other printed promotional materials.
I was the in-house designer and set-up technician for this print / decal business. This involved design services for clients including branding, poster design, and design re-creations, as well as technical setup for vinyl plotters, screen printing, and large format printing jobs.
I received an Ontario Graduate Fellowship for this two year program. My Major Research Project (Extra Medium) explored the inclination to analog media as a response to an increasingly saturated media environment.
I graduated this program with Great Distinction. This program required taking at least one, often two, courses in every discipline offered in the Fine Arts department. Later, I began to specialize in analog photography and photo history, while still continuing to take practical courses and lectures in design. I also did design work for the school paper, faculty of fine arts promotion, and student clubs.
This short experimental documentary was a primary component of my Major Research Project for my Master's degree. It took a look at the perceived value of the earmarks of physical media as a way to discover meaning in the virtual space of social media. The piece itself was a mix of digital video, Super 8 footage, stop motion, and motion graphics, and took great inspiration from the record “The Medium is the Massage” by Marshall McLuhan, Quentin Fiore, and Jerome Agel. The goal was to provide a meditation on the impact of a medium, by making the graphical treatment more important than the participants they framed.
This book documents new skateparks in western Canada. It focuses on the change in public perception towards skateparks, seeing them as places for community building rather than a nuisance. The travel was funded by a scholarship, and the book was crowdfunded on Kickstarter. $500 was donated to the charity Right to Play.
My primary expertise is in Adobe After Effects. I've been working in this program since 2012 and have a very thorough knowledge of scripting, expressions, and have assembled a large toolkit of hand made rigs and templates over the years. I am quite at home with the whole Adobe CC Professional suite, particularly Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop. I also regularly use Figma, Procreate, and Blender when needed, and am actively working on developing skills in Cavalry, Procreate Dreams, and Rive. In general, I enjoy discovering and perfecting a workflow and, while it's much more of a personal project, am quite proud of my home B&W darkroom setup and do a lot of film photography.
